Toronto Film Festival: People’s Choice

Toronto Film Festival is 11 days of emerging films and future classics with half a million fans rubbing shoulders with international film stars, red carpet premiers, industry pro conferences, virtual reality, a jurryless non-competitive awards list including: People’s Choice Awards, People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award, People’s Choice Documentary Award & Best Canadian Feature Film + film fans welcomed to the colossal Film Reference Library - film scripts, research files and special collections. TIFF hosts a chilled-out North American counterpart to its European siblings, with a focus on fans, Canadian pride, and plenty of party venues such as Spin Toronto: a ping pong social club & Presidential Gourmet Catering in Toronto Ontario Canada.

Toronto Film Festival: People’s Choice

TIFF, the chilled out younger brother to the internationally recognised Cannes, offers a fan-friendly atmosphere where the ‘People’ choose the award winners – the non-competitive non-jury selections mean 13 awards are distributed according to the ratings given by TIFFers, the winners going on to play at their own followup micro-TIFF, many of which later go on to win best picture at the Oscars in the same year, like Chariots of Fire, American Beauty, Slumdog Millionaire, The Kings Speech and 12 Years a Slave, and some non-Oscars winners including The Princess Bride, Amélie and Room. The winners of

For 11 days Toronto hosts red carpet premieres, conferences, heritage and open-archives, but the diversity of the location serves in its favour throughout the rest of the year too, with a huge number of Hollywood pictures being filmed here – so don’t be surprised if you spot a star off the screen!

Somewhere for Film Buffs and Scholars Alike

The Library serves as a film-buffs galore with their extensive collections of 60,000 press kit, photograph & news clipping files, 20,000 books, 13,000 film and television titles, 2,000 film scripts, 700 magazines and journals, 80 Special Collections and 300,000 images, 11,000 posters and 6,000 soundtracks available for research from the public (and online).

Oscars buzz Begins in September

Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where the Oscars buzz begins in September with pros + media, getting more global press coverage and celebrity appearances than any other film festival - second only to Cannes.

World Premiérs & Director’s Masterworks

TIFF sizzles with world premières, retrospectives of world-class director’s masterworks, hundreds of independent cinema presenters vying for recognition & awards, and débuts by top filmmakers like Werner Herzog. It starts Thursday after Labour Day, with Canadian & international cinema screenings, conferences for indie experts, Hollywood-style galas at TIFF Bell Lightbox cultural centre + a street festival & midnight madness shows at multiple venues throughout downtown Toronto.

Since 1976

The Toronto International Film Festival, inaugurated in 1976, has evolved from a small festival, showcasing Canadian filmmakers, into a world-class event bringing Hollywood moguls banging at its door. TIFF is now an international melange of genres & languages, unreeling 300+ films a year, unscripted documentaries & glitzy Hollywood dramas + the place where Oscar-winning films like Slum Dog Millionaire, The King’s Speech, Black Swan and Silver Linings Playbook were first talked about.

TIFF Hangouts, Festival Streets & Midnight Madness

Each September the city throbs with hundreds of thousands of guests. Bars, cafes and restaurants (like celeb hangouts Harbord Room & Michael’s On Simcoe) + hotels (like Ritz-Carleton & Drake) overflow with stars, journalists, pro schmoozers and indie dealmakers. TIFF parties, for A-listers, are held at places like Spoke Club & Soho House, but by invitation only.

For non-celebs, the streets around TIFF Bell Lightbox on King St West (the centre of the festival with 5 cinemas, 3 studios, 2 restaurants and a public atrium) transform into a pedestrian mall during the first weekend, luring fans with musical performances and outdoor screenings. Choose packages including City-to-City (with features from places like Athens, Seoul, London) or late-night Midnight Madness for horror and cult classics enthusiasts held at a multitude of venues throughout downtown Toronto.

TIFF, 2nd only to Cannes, starts the Oscars buzz in September from downtown Toronto Canada!

Season & Weather

Season: Autumn
Temperature: 13 to 22 °C

Toronto weather in September is warm to hot during the day with lots of sunshine and only a small chance of rain. Since TIFF screenings, galas, and most events take place indoors, weather is not a real issue. That said, for post cinema dinners and evening outings on the town, remember that it does get quite chilly at night, so have a jacket handy.
