Django Reinhardt: Jazz Manouche Jam

Django Reinhardt Festival is a 5-day jam session with jazz manouche gypsy-swing & sizzling acoustic guitar, violin, mandolin & accordion concerts in honour of the iconic Belgian-Romani guitarist Jean Django Reinhardt –creator of hot club jazz, for 15,000 fans and 120 musicians in a bohemian ambiance around a 12th century castle. What began as a small gathering in 1968, is now one of oldest jazz fests in Europe, drawing Django “pilgrims” to pay homage to a jazz pioneer, and global crowds seeking 1930s hot “Minor Swing” & “Nuages” + Afro-Caribbean & Cuban world beats around stages, at the guitar-maker’s village, and in the forest & regal gardens of the festival grounds surrounding Château Fontainebleau, 55 km form Paris, in Samois-sur-Seine.

About

Django Reinhardt: Jazz Manouche Jam

Django Reinhardt Jazz Festival, a 5-day homage to the Belgium-born French Guitarist and the Gypsy jazz he influenced. Founded in 1968 as a single day of celebration for the guitarists, often considered the greatest of all time, the event soon expanded into the modern 5-day affair, where fans gather for brass, guitar, big band, woodwind and strings. The event takes on the nature of the jazz it emulated, where improvisation is everywhere on and off the stage, with artisan craftsmen selling beautiful instruments and jazz legends perform classic hits.

Gypsy Swingers & Improv Legends

Although the theme stays true to Reinhardt, these days the Gypsy jazz can be found with a mix of trends within contemporary music, with a mix of guitar riffs and organ chords and a worldly mix from New York to Paris swing. Of all the artists to pay homage to Reinhardt, the trumpeter and vocalist Chet Baker has to be the most notable – becoming his own point of influence at the show since his death in 1988. Previous artists have been Art Farmer, Totts Thielemans, Manu Dibango, Georges Arvanitas, Harold Singer, Gilbert Leroux, Jo Privat, Jean-Claude Fogrenbach, Joe Turner and Aldo Romano.

Luthier Village

Manufacturers and artists of a range of instruments can be found throughout, to buy or fix everything from electric guitars to accordions, all professionally trained to produce the best sound. Guitar makers Joe Merchand, AJL-Guitars’ Ari-Jukka Loumaranta, Morgan Briant and Eric Perringaux have all attended in the past, along with along with micro-mechanic Vladimir Muzic.

Django Reinhardt honours the legend with Gypsy swing, jazz & guitar craft in France!
