Cheese Rolling Festival: Eccentric UK

Cheese Rolling Festival, a legendary eccentric British sport that gets participants to run down a steep hill after a wheel of cheese; fans can join the race or watch from the hillside or play adult games like: shin kicking, wrestling for a belt, tug of war and grinning for cake through a horses collar, or heading to a local pub for Dutch courage + family games: dancing for ribbons, coconut-shies, bobbing for treacle-smeared penny loaves, bobbing for apples and oranges in water. The cheesy fest dates back to early 1800s harvest rites, but these days it’s just good family fun and a chance to break or watch others break a bone chasing a cheese rolling at 112 km/h, amidst honest British madness on Cooper’s Hill in Brockworth Gloucestershire UK.

About

Cheese Rolling Festival: Eccentric UK

Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake was once the odd pastime of a small village (or as some speculate, a Pagan Ritual), these days it’s considered one of the UKs most popular extreme sports, reaching an international audience for the fantastically mad tradition of running down a large, steep hill after a wheel of cheese, which is rolling 112 km/h (70mph), with cheese-chasers coming from all over the world to take part – past winners being American and Japanese.

Painful Adult + Fun Kids Games

When participants aren’t spending time running down Cooper’s Hill after a wheel of Double Gloucester, they can be found attempting to become kings of various other leg bruising events like shin kicking, where contenders grab one another’s shoulders and kick the opponents legs, trying to trip them; wrestling for the prize of a belt and tug-of-war. Family events are equally absurd, with grinning through the a horses collar, where the contestant puts on a horses collar and whomever has the funnies facial expression wins a prize, and various bobbing events, including penny loaves smeared in treacle, and oranges and the classic apples in a large tub of water that must be collected by only using your mouth.

Pre-Race-Pints

An unofficial tradition takes place before the race in the local pubs – in Shurdington, a nearby village, where visitors can rub shoulders with experienced cheese-chasers to discuss or eavesdrop on racing tactics, or fill-up on some Dutch courage. Of course a pint is useful to numb the bruises after the race too, and fans should check out the nearby Cheese Rollers pub named after the race, as well as Cross Hands (now called the Toby Carvery) or The Victoria in Brockworth.

Cheese Rolling Festival is 112 km/h cheese wheels + shin kicking, apple bobbing & local pubs!
